Capoeira

Not being offered in Winter 2025

Capoeira is a martial art, dance and art form that combines kicks, escapes, take-downs and acrobatics with an exotic musical aspect, style and artistic expression. Originating in the Northeast of Brazil (about 400 years ago), by slaves from the African continent, Capoeira had to be practiced in secrecy after its lethal potential was discovered by the slave masters. Although Capoeira was created as a way to free the slaves from their oppressors, it has evolved into one of the most hypnotic and interesting art forms yet to come out of Brazil. Two major styles of Capoeira exist in Brazil today, Angola and Regional.

Capoeira is very beneficial for kids and teenagers as well, it teaches the importance of discipline, respect, honor, self defense and the value of friendship. Another special things about Capoeira is that it also develops great musicality as it incorporates singing, clapping, drumming, and playing various musical instruments. One of the most incredible effects of Capoeira is that it keeps the body and mind sharp – its believed to prolong the life due to the healthy lifestyle, happiness, movement culture and music that keeps us young even at old age. You can see many old Capoeira masters still doing incredible tricks and traveling all over the world into their 70’s and 80’s.

Capoeira is done in a roda “circle”, it is called “Capoeira Game” which is played, not fought, and played with a partner, NOT against. Because of that Capoeira creates a community of friends that come together to train hard and push one another to continue progressing in all aspects of life. The uniqueness of Capoeira will give your body physical strength, power, flexibility and coordination. It also strengthens the mind self-confidence, concentration, courage, creativity and dedication.

Youth and Adults will participate together.

Floorball is a type of floor hockey that uses three- five field players and a goalie. Games can be played indoors or outdoors on just about any surface. Floorball is like hockey but with some key differences.  Players are not allowed to stick check, stick lift, or go through the opponents stick to dispossess the ball.  Floorball is primarily a non-contact sport aside from shoulder-to-shoulder contact, similar to basketball or soccer.

What is the difference between floorball and hockey?
The big difference between the two is that the rules of floorball do not allow for any high sticking, stick contact, or body contact, so the game tends to be less physical than Floor Hockey and more skill oriented and fast paced.

All equipment will be provided by Intramurals, with the except for goalie masks, they must be supplied by the participant.

Tryouts for 10 month + Program [Calgary]

The 2025-26 tryout season (Sept-June)
Our tryout process begins with a parent information night (+ Program Developmental Parent Meeting), which is a prerequisite for parents/legal guardians to attend prior to having their child come to tryout. We do this to ensure that those who sign up for tryouts have an understanding in advance of the program and expectations in order to make an informed decision when accepting an invitation to the team. ONLY truly interested children who wish to train in one of our Developmental Programs should do the try out.

Regardless of the outcome of tryouts, being a part of a gymnastics program is extremely beneficial as the sport of gymnastics is the foundational sport. There can be a number of reasons why a child is accepted or not accepted into the program and sometimes it can all come down to simply the timing in a child's life. It is important for families to remain supportive to their children through the process and be proud of them for all of their accomplishments. Being assessed in anyway can cause some level of anxiety. We will do our best to make sure the tryout is a positive experience. One way families can support their child is by planning ahead for the tryout by preparing and reading through all of our information as well as informing the child of what to expect.

Web page updated January 2025
The 2025-26 tryout season (Sept-June)
Our tryout process begins with a parent information night (LTAD 101 Parent Meeting), which is a prerequisite for parents/legal guardians to attend prior to having their child come to the tryouts. We do this in this way so that those who sign up for tryouts understand in advance the program and expectations, to accept an invitation to the team as the important information is provided to families to make informed decisions. ONLY truly interested children who wish to train in one of our Developmental Competitive Program should do the try out.

Regardless of the outcome of tryouts, being a part of a gymnastics program is extremely beneficial as the sport of gymnastics is the foundation of sport. One way families can support their little one is by planning ahead for the tryout by preparing and reading through all of our information as well as informing the child of what to expect.

Process for tryout for the 2025-26 Training year (September 2025-June 2026)

The information night is called “LTAD 101 Parent Meeting”
At the LTAD 101 parent meeting, we will provide attending families the opportunity to review in advance detailed information including what the fee structure will look like so that if your gymnast is invited to be on one of the LTAD Teams so you are prepared to register with a quick turn around deadline.

Whether you are new to the sport of gymnastics or an existing gymnast who wants to learn some new fun tricks, our Summer Camps are for you! Summer camps run for 4 or 5 consecutive days and can be done as a as a full day camp or you can just choose to do a morning or afternoon week long camp. (see age requirements for full day). All camps are co-ed and groups will be divided into the most appropriate age & ability on the first day. While our camps are primarily gymnastics based, we also incorporate team building, crafts, games and much more. *Themes are lightly incorporated.  All campers must be able to use the washroom facilities unassisted.

Preschool Campers--ages 4-5 (coed)
We are proud to offer our 4-5 year old preschool camps, either a week of morning camp OR afternoon camp. (Please do not register for both within the same week, as we find a full day is too much for this age group). Themes for each week of camp will be lightly incorporated into our programming, with lots of fun, games, gymnastic skills and more.
