Swiftwater Safety and Awareness

This 1-day Swiftwater Safety and Awareness program emphasizes river assessment and safety while working around, on, or in bodies of water, including practical distinctions between safe and non-safe water sites. Skills are taught based on the "Hazards to Observe (H2O)" program developed for employees working around a moving water site, including swimming, river crossing, and basic rescue techniques. The course consists of an online learning component followed by a full day at the water site.
This training is taught by Rocky Mountain Adventure Medicine to the recommendations of the NFPA at the Awareness level, and the Guidelines for Safe Working Procedures published by Alberta Workplace Heath and Safety.
Certification is valid for 3 years. Re-certification is through re-taking the same course.
Prerequisite: strong swimming skills and confidence in open, moving water.

Swiftwater Rescue 1 & 2

Develop the skills to safely rescue yourself and others in a moving water environment. This 2-day Swiftwater Rescue course includes SWR 1 focused on self-rescue skills (basic personal safety in and around moving water, open water swimming skills, and rescue principles), and SWR 2 focused on technique and equipment for rescue of others in a variety of open-water environments. The course includes two 8-hour days and is taught entirely at the water site, focused on practical skills.
This training is taught by Rocky Mountain Adventure Medicine to current NFPA Standards 1670 & 1006.
Certification is valid for 3 years. Re-certification is through re-taking the same 2-day course.
Prerequisite: strong swimming skills and confidence in open, moving water.

Note: You may rent a drysuit through RMAM for use in this course. When you register, you will be offered the ability to register for "Gear for SWR Course", either drysuit-only or drysuit, PFD, and helmet. Select an option to pay for the rental and provide your sizing information. If you have your own gear, or do not wish to use a drysuit, you may skip this additional option.
